Since exiting General Hospital a year ago, A Martinez (ex-Roy) has played an idealistic assistant district attorney, a comedic dictator, a wealthy politician and a gay priest. How's that for diversity? Next up, he appears opposite Jean Smart (Designing Women) in the Lifetime movie Killer Instinct: From The Files of Candice DeLong.
The telepic, which premieres on Monday, October 6, is inspired by the memoirs of DeLong, one of the FBI's first female profilers. A composite of many different cases she worked on, Killer Instinct focuses on her search for the identity of a serial killer with the help of her partner and married lover, Bobby Mazariegos, played by Martinez. "I had to really practice before I said that name out loud. It's a mouthful," jokes Martinez. "He's a complicated guy, morally. He's definitely good at his job and committed to it. But you wouldn't completely say that he's wearing a white hat. The way he handles his personal life is questionable."
A Woman's World
The way Martinez sees it, playing second fiddle to a real-life heroine isn't such a bad thing. "Candy was instrumental in bringing down the Unabomber. She's a remarkable human being. The FBI is such a male-dominated organization that to do well in it, much less to thrive in it at the level that she did, demands a tremendous commitment. She's a perfect character for Lifetime to take a look at.
"Luckily, they did a nice job of getting in some interesting stuff for me to do," he adds. "Usually, in Lifetime films, you're in support of a leading lady, and sometimes the characters in those films are a little bit less than stand-up guys. But this guy isn't simple."
Roy Revisited
In addition to Killer Instinct, Martinez has completed principal photography on the independent feature Isla Bella, a romantic comedy fable with a Romeo & Juliet feel. And a return to daytime can never be ruled out. "I would hope to be working in daytime again," says Martinez. "Aside from Santa Barbara's Cruz, Roy is by far the most impacting character in terms of what people care about when they talk to me. I wasn't on that long, and he was arguably out of focus during a lot of that period of time.
"Even so, he really landed for a lot of people," he concludes. "I have a lot of affection for him and for GH."
