Thumbs Up!

A, Tour De Force

SOD, 9/10/02

It's a bittersweet feeling.  After languishing on the back-burner for the better part of a year-and-a-half, A Martinez (Roy) is finally getting back to a high-stakes, high-profile tale, of which he's so deserving.  Of course, this comes on the heels of the revelation that the actor is going to be leaving next month when his contract expires.

Regardless of this fact (which we can't help but be mighty sad about), Martinez is an actor revitalized.  Given little direction for so many months, Roy is now a character with purpose.  He was mysteriously sucked into the web of dastardly Mafioso Alcazar when $1 million dropped into his lap.  But since then, rather than weakening as Alcazar's grip tightens around his neck, Roy is becoming more formidable.  He stands up to this baddie with passion and resolve, and even though his actions are just this side of the law, it's a turn that is in keeping with this character.

Inhabited by an inherently noble actor like Martinez, Roy was a convincing white hat.  He was a romantic dude and a good partner to Luke.  But in reality, he is a character who was born shady.  In his earliest introduction, he was a mob thug, just like Luke, who was redeemed to an extent by his love for Bobbie.  Pitting Roy against not only Alcazar, but Sonny, is an inspired move.  He's certainly no long a junior mobster, but worthy of status as Sony and Alcazar's potential equal.  A noble profession?  No.  But with the action, drama and opportunities this is providing for both Roy and Martinez, this is one time where crime sure does pay.
